In this spirit, we would like to share three amazing informative videos about Native economies. Created by The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) and recently released, this series of three short videos are titled “Why Native Small Businesses Matter and How to Grow Them.”
What is a Native Economy?
In this first video, NCAI explains:
- What a Native economy originally looked like.
- How the heart of an economic life used to be a robust local and inter-tribal system of commerce.
To understand how Native economies became what they currently are, we have to look back at how it used to be. This short video explains how the Native economy used to thrive and sustain Native communities.
How Colonialism Radically Changed Native Economies
In the second video, NCAI walks us through:
- What happened when settlers and the American government began to change the Native economy.
- That economic development of western civilization cut off the need for all Tribal members to contribute to the Native economy.
- Limited opportunities for community members made some dependent on the government for support.
- An explanation of economic leakage.
This video shows us how Native economies were changed by outside forces and the repercussions that have been suffered as a result.
How Native Nations are Now Reclaiming Their Economies
The good news is that Native economies are making a comeback. This last video of the series explains how these self-sustaining economies are being reclaimed. It covers:
- How American Indians are reconnecting with their entrepreneurial spirit.
- Several various strategies Tribal nations can embrace to nurture a vibrant economy.
