Shanne Soulier, the President & CEO of Big Spirit, Inc., recently had the privilege of participating in a small gathering of Native Businesses and community leaders for a Roundtable Discussion, facilitated by Minnesota Senator Tina Smith’s staff.
This gathering aimed to foster conversations surrounding the challenges, successes, and growth opportunities for Native small businesses throughout the State. Much of the discussion centered around available funding for small businesses, ongoing support, and how initiatives already in place are working or not working.
Challenges Faced by American Indian Small Businesses
Soulier seized the opportunity to shed light on the hurdles he has faced as a Native American small business, especially when navigating the complexities of state and federal contracts. The discussion underscored the overwhelming nature of the process, the challenge for small businesses to meet contract requirements, and the need for targeted solutions to level the playing field if the state and federal government want to do business with Native American small businesses.
Support Resources and Programs
Participants discussed the existing support resources and programs available for Native small businesses. Identifying gaps and exploring avenues for improvement, the roundtable aimed at ensuring that these businesses have the tools and help needed to thrive in the competitive landscape.
An Emphasis on Collaboration
The conversation also explored the potential for collaboration and a harmonious approach to opportunities. By sharing success stories and strategies, the participants sought to inspire collective growth and empowerment within the Native small business community.
Policy and Advocacy
An integral part of the discussion centered on policy and advocacy. Participants emphasized the importance of creating a helpful policy environment that recognizes and supports the unique needs of Native American small businesses in Minnesota, ensuring fair access to opportunities.
Steps are being taken in Minnesota to create an environment where Native American-owned small businesses can thrive, supported by advocacy, policy changes, and a collective commitment to success. Big Spirit is thankful to be included in this important conversation, contributing to the ongoing dialogue that will shape the future of Native American small businesses throughout the state of Minnesota.
