Packing his bags and taking a plane ride across the Pacific Ocean, Shanne recently journeyed to Oahu for a Hawaii Trade Mission. The purpose of this travel was to connect with the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce and other businesses in the state. Shanne traveled to learn the successes and challenges Hawaiian business face, as well as opportunities to work with them.
This trip was arranged through the American Indian Chamber of Commerce of California. Big Spirit has been working with and participating in programs with them for several years. The focus of the dialog of this event was starting businesses, growing existing businesses, and advocacy efforts to promote purchasing from Native businesses.
The event consisted of three days of scheduled events and education. Panel topics included contracting opportunities in Guam, conversations with American Indian tribes and organizations, and tips for securing grant funds.
Throughout their time in Hawaii, attendees were given opportunities to enjoy extra activities to experience Hawaiian culture. These included a tour of Pearl Harbor National AZ Memorial, a catamaran sunset sail, and a luau. Shanne especially enjoyed experiencing a luau because it gave local businesses and the chamber members who attended this festive cultural meal together an opportunity to get to know one another better.
