Recently, Big Spirit had the honor of working alongside the non-profit organization Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Center (GLITC). Based out of Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin, GLITC has the mission to enhance the quality of life for all Native people.
One way they reach that mission is through a program called Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center (GLITEC). For 27 years, GLITEC has served federally recognized Tribes and urban Indian communities in Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Chicago, Illinois.
GLITC’s purpose is to support American Indian/Alaska Native communities in their efforts to improve the health of their people. They do this through partnering directly with communities, educating on the local, state, and national levels, and producing publicly available resources.
Working with GLITC, Big Spirit was the marketing agency hired to produce luggage tags featuring local Native American artists.
We produced six bright and beautiful luggage tags. Four of the designs were created by Native American artist Chimakwa Nibawii. His designs included depictions of “Ancestors and the Clan Teachings,” “Bear Roots,” “Turtle Island Son,” and “Waawaaskeshii,” which is the Ojibwe word for white-tailed deer. The other two luggage tags were created by Caitlin Newago. Her art featured bright flowers created in beautiful contrasting colors.
These six meaningful luggage tags will not only help travelers identify their bags, but they will help spread the word and bring attention to Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center and talented Native American artists.
Thank you, GLITC! We enjoyed being partners with you on this important, yet fun, project. It was an honor to produce an item to celebrate local artists and help them get their art out into the community uniquely!
